Watch: A walk in Zuccotti Park

When I arrived in New York earlier this month, I knew one of the first places I’d need to visit was Zuccotti Park, for a glimpse into the home of the worldwide Occupy movement. I’ve spent some time at Occupy Vancouver, and I was curious to see the resemblance and the differences.

I finally made it out to Occupy Wall Street last Saturday, Nov. 12, as protesters were beginning to gear up for today’s big “Day of Action.”

I’d originally planned to write about the sights and sounds — but plans change, and it seemed more fitting produce an audio slideshow. So here it is, though perhaps a bit later than I’d wished.

I thought it best that the slideshow speak for itself rather than be colored by my own views on the movement.

Dollars and sense

Making sense of the economic crisis is not difficult.

Fault lies with the businesses that continued broken, outdated policies and those that took advantage of consumers for a temporary gain, without heeding future consequences. Lack of credit is a huge consequence, and it led to a lack of finances, which led to less purchasing power and a falling stock market and widespread panic.

And look to the “big three.” Why weren’t they making enough money to provide for themselves? People didn’t want their products. They didn’t keep up with the innovation and new technology that international automakers offered.

The media allowed itself to fall into the same pit. Innovation and new technology? Got it. But is it what consumers want? Why aren’t we asking them? The consumers are not the journalists, not the newspapers, not the atypical social media literate individuals. The consumers are everyone, everywhere, who are subjected to media as …

Money Musings

As 2009 looms ahead, many reconsider the past year’s events, scramble to finish preparing for the holidays and look to New Year’s Day with hope. Oops – make that pessimism. New Year’s resolutions once reflected abundance: lose weight, exercise, learn to ___. This year, fewer people can afford those luxuries and more will lose the necessities. While charity aids many, individuals like me wonder how else to help as we buckle our belts tighter than ever before. Here are a few ideas:

1. Listen. The most important thing anyone can do is pay attention. Everyone has their own sphere of influence. If you are in a position where you cannot help someone, you can still bring a need to light.
2. Offer your time. Maybe someone needs a babysitter or cannot shovel their driveway. Everyone is in the same boat right now, and you will probably be in the same position of …
